Project Description: 

We are seeking a German WEEE expert for a consultancy contract to contribute to our study on WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) in Kenya. The consultant will support the review and interpretation of collected data and develop a dedicated chapter on business models within the WEEE value chain, incorporating perspectives on the potential inclusion of a Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO).

The objective of Assignment:

• Review and support the interpretation of data collected in the context of the Baseline Study on WEEE in Nairobi, Kenya.
• Develop a chapter on business models within the WEEE value chain in Nairobi/Kenya, including the potential role of a PRO.
   

Scope of Work and Tasks: 

The consultant will be responsible for the following work packages (WPs):

Work Package 1: Data Analysis and Interpretation

• Review and support the interpretation of data from both the formal and informal sectors, provided by AHK and EWIK.
• Conduct one feedback loop.
   

Work Package 2: Business Model Development

• Develop business models along the WEEE value chain in Kenya.
• Address collection, aggregation, transport, dismantling, recycling, and end-of-life processes.

Work Package 3: Incentives and Investment Strategies

• Identify incentives to enhance WEEE collection and recycling efficiency.
• Analyze how income-generating fractions (batteries, cables, motherboards) can be better structured to attract investment.

Work Package 4: Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) Integration

• Assess how a PRO can be incorporated into the sector.
• Conduct one feedback loop before WP 5 starts.

Work Package 5: Benchmarking and Best Practices

• Research and showcase best practices from comparable markets for the Kenyan context.
  Work Package 6: Support Writing and Review Reports of AHK
• Perform one feedback loop and support the writing process of AHK.

Place(s) of Assignment: 

The contract assignment is based in Nairobi, Kenya. However, the tasks will be performed remotely in Germany, with virtual feedback loops.

Application Requirements: 

Applicants shall submit an estimation of person-days and experts per work package, along with a financial offer for their work.

We welcome expressions of interest from qualified German WEEE experts with experience in business modeling and WEEE management. Ideally, the expert should have prior experience in WEEE in similar markets to Kenya and possess a high-level overview of potential German technology in WEEE that can support the Kenyan WEEE sector.
